No winks – The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Review

Who just throws away gifted wallets? Seriously?

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty stars Ben Stiller as the titular character Mitty, who’s more or less your average middle-aged man with an unexciting job. Working as a negative manager (had to look that up), Walter’s life turns topsy-turvy over a missing negative film. What follows is a journey of a lifetime in the life of an otherwise monotonous man.

Ben Stiller’s a particularly accomplished director. His Tropic Thunder is one of my all time-favorites. Flecks of similar comic situations can be seen here such as the overly stylised and hilarious dream situations. It helps us have a glimpse of the protagonist’s rather creative mind.

Doesn’t fit quite well with the rest of the movie’s tone.

Sure, the zone-out’s are hilarious every now and then, great for keeping you interested in the story. But what if the problem, is the story? Walter Mitty aims to send a message about love, about living life to the fullest and that, is ambitious. With that, comes a series of challenges. The plot is unable to meet them.

Stiller delivers on all fronts – competent performance, adequate directing. The rest of the cast play their roles well, particularly Scott. Despite this, the unfulfilling storyline results in a not-so-memorable movie.
